The Science of Health Care Worker Burnout: Assessing and Improving Health Care Worker Well-Being

Context.— Problems with health care worker (HCW) well-being have become a leading concern in medicine given their severity and robust links to outcomes like medical error, mortality, turnover. Objective.— To describe the state of science regarding HCW well-being, including how it is measured, what predicts, institutional individual interventions appear reduce it. Data Sources.— Peer review articles as well multiple large data sets collected within our own research team are used nature burnout, associations resources, tools improve well-being. Conclusions.— Rates burnout alarmingly high, placing safety patients HCWs at risk. help address urgent need HCWs, we summarize some most promising early interventions, point toward future that uses standardized metrics evaluate (with focus on low-cost personal interventions).
